HKUST PhD Chronicle, Week 4, Action

This week was an out-of-concentration kind of week. Have you ever had one of those? You feel busy, your plate is full of mini-tasks, but a bigger goal is waiting on just one tiny prerequisite. For me, that bigger task was constantly being postponed by all sorts of obstacles.

My main goal was to learn and reproduce a project developed by the lab. As a new member, however, I don’t have a workstation with an NVIDIA Graphics Card, and I can’t run the GPU-only applications with my AMD Razen CPU.

The problem is clear, and the solutions seems to be:

  • Wait 2 months for my new workstation to arrive
  • Rent a GPU VPS online
  • Ask for access to a GPU from an HPC node
  • Or, the simplest solution: ask a lab member to borrow the workstation, if I dared to do so

Sometime we get distracted by solutions that are too far away. Maybe the problem is very simple, with no need to complicate the solutions. The key was to step back, look at the big picture of the problem. And take action! Action! Action! Action!
